Cyber Security Analyst (Contract)

Inside IR35

Contract Term: 10 months

Contracting Authority: STFC

Location: Hybrid - Didcot 3 days a week

CTC/SC/DV Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be eligible and willing to undergo these checks


As a Cyber Security Analyst your main responsibilities will be:

  • Assist STFC's cyber team to define, practice and verify the adequacy of the cyber critical incident response.
  • Assist STFC's infrastructure team who manage the BAU activities relevant to ongoing cyber assurance, patching, cyber readiness, and routine incident response.
  • Assist project managers overseeing digital infrastructure projects that are relevant to or improve cyber security in some way. Their contribution of relevant SME knowledge and experience will ensure successful and secure project outcomes. The larger projects currently include:
  • Project FUND - Automation of essential Firmware and cyber security patch deployment across STFC's IT and Operational Technology environments.
  • Projects relating to STFC's ongoing cyber compliance and cyber risk mitigation.
  • Project ORION - Replacement of high-performance campus network cores (multiple campus locations).
  • ClearPass Network Access Control implementation Project (multiple campus locations).
  • Wi-Fi - full replacement, circa 3000 access points (multiple campus locations).
  • Firewall Infrastructure and rules harmonisation (multiple campus locations).

You'll have relevant experience in:

  • You will benefit from a relevant information security / information management background enabling you to work effectively with IT and business area representatives, academic staff (scientists, researchers) and innovation entrepreneurs
  • You will have incident management experience, and an ability to quickly tailor responses to deal with fast-paced situations
  • Proven people & Stakeholder management skills, allowing for communication of technical matters in a manner appropriate to the recipient.
  • Knowledge and Expertise
  • Knowledge of Information Security standards, legislation and practices, including GDPR & Data Protection act 2018
  • Experience with a range of IT systems (both on-premises and cloud-based)
  • Knowledge of technical areas, such as anti-virus, networking, vulnerability management, encryption (Microsoft & Linux environments is advantageous)
  • Strong problem-solving ability, with flexibility to think creatively and adapt to and implement constantly evolving systems and services.
  • An ability to see strategically and the wider implications of security challenges
  • Able to deal with senior technical staff regarding guidance on interpreting policy and applying a pragmatic approach to resolution of sophisticated problems
  • Knowledge of security technologies potentially including Microsoft 365 security tools, patch management tools, SIEM, IPS, IDS and content inspection.
  • The role is conditional on having or obtaining UK National Security Vetting Security Clearance (SC)
